Shyam Sundar Co – Jewellers is a heritage jewellery-house with a history of making a difference. The heritage comes from a
background of over fifty years - a journey that began in Dhaka (now in Bangladesh) and, after partition, led to a relocation in
Agartala (Tripura) over fifty years ago – eventually branching out into a number of franchised showrooms – to be finally
head-quartered in Kolkata. And the history of making a difference comes with excellence in design and craftsmanship of exclusive
lines of designer handcrafted gold jewellery – for which the house is reputed.
This good old jewellery house was founded by the Late G C Saha, a leading light of Agartala society; and the second generation,
daughter Arpita Saha and husband Rupak Saha, are committed to take the good name further.
This ‘good lineage and great promise’ was summed up in the baseline of company’s corporate identity – ‘A rich legacy, a
continued pursuit of excellence’- and reinforced with the choice of Soha Ali Khan as the first brand ambassador.
In 2008, the golden jubilee year of the organisation, Shyam Sundar Co – Jewellers presented ‘Adi-Kriti’, an exclusive
line of high-fashion gold jewellery that is inspired by the tribal culture of India. The ‘Adi-Kriti’ product-idea and marketing
project, conceptualized by the Kolkata-based Resource Indica Pvt Ltd, won the support of World Gold Council, Mumbai; and went
on to captivate the bold and beautiful and capture popular imagination in Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. The very next
year, this award-winning brand won, for Shyam Sundar Co- Jewellers, membership of Fashion Design Council Of India (FDCI) ; and
a place for itself, at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week and other fashion trade events, to showcase the designer jewellery.
The year 2010 saw ‘Classic Calcutta’, classic versions of traditional gold jewellery of Kolkata, being unveiled at the India
International Jewellery Show, Mumbai - attracting attention of the jewellery trade and industry, wholesale - and is now showcased
at leading jewellery stores across the country. Somewhere in between came the invitation to become a member of various gems and
jewellery industry and trade bodies like GJEPC & GJF. At Shyam Sundar Co – Jewellers , development of new collections of designer
handcrafted gold and diamond jewellery is a continuous process.
Exclusive collections include Adi-Kriti (high-fashion gold jewellery inspired by the
tribal culture of India) , Classic Calcutta (Classic versions of traditional gold jewellery
of Kolkata) , Shubh-Vivah (wedding collection of bridal jewellery) ,
Samudra (designer gold jewellery that is really out of the blue) ,
Butterfly (light-weight gold jewellery that are light as a butterfly and just as beautiful)
, The Rainbow Collection (gold jewellery that mirrors your true colours)
and Bishnupur collection (gold jewellery that is inspired by the temple-scape of Bishnupur).
Shyam Sundar Co Jewellers has always extended its pursuit of excellence beyond the four
walls of the jewellery showrooms – promoting heritage, culture and all that is really gold.
Along the way, there have been many awards for excellence in design and craftsmanship; and
The first Kolkata showroom at 125 Rashbehari Avenue, (Near Triangular Park), was launched
in August 2011, on the strength of this ‘good lineage and great promise’; and the choice
of Konkona Sensharma as brand ambassador.
The launch captured popular imagination and attracted encouraging foot-falls at the
showroom - leading to the exclusive collections of designer hand-crafted gold jewellery
becoming a talking point in the city; and Shyam Sundar Co Jewellers finding a special
place in the minds and hearts of the people of Kolkata.
The house has, since, added two more showrooms in the city - Behala and Barasat
respectively – and, with Kaushiki Chakraborty as the new face of the brand, introduced
‘Bandish Aur Raagdari, ie, ‘classic tradition and personal style’, in the design and
craftsmanship of gold and diamond jewellery. And, now, the new flagship store at
131A Rashbehari Avenue, Kolkata, comes in the wake of a long felt need for making
more room for growing customer needs and the special relationship with Kolkata.
